Snakewing - Burn It To Stop The Bleeding

Heavy as all hell punk-sludge-metal.

Sunday, December 30, 2012

Halshug - CS Demo

Heavy, stoner rock-infused punk with a thick, sludgy guitar tone.

Closet Burner

'Cause they're gay, get it? Heavy, punky powerviolence.

The Secret - Agnus Dei

Blackened, crusty hardcore. Not one original thing about this, right down to the Kurt Ballou production job and being released on Southern Lord, but it's rad as fuck.

Nadja - Dagdrøm

Probably the most diverse non-collaborative Nadja album that I've heard. Good shit.

Witch Hunt

Crusty, melodic punk, alternating male and female vocals. Discography was recently posted at Cut & Paste, check it out there.

Agowilt - Clocks Made Of Their Own Bones

Nominally black metal, with elements of doom, crust, noise, and ambient. Anarcho-primitivist lyrics. One-sided LP forthcoming. Fucking cool.

Kowloon Walled City - Container Ships

Speaking of this band, here's their new record. Sludge and noise rock, with a few softer, more atmospheric bits. Though I wouldn't quite call it post rock.

Ceremony - Violence Violence

Remember when Ceremony played powerviolence-tinged hardcore? Remember when Ceremony played music that didn't suck? Those were the days.

Pigs - You Ruin Everything

This one seems to have flown under everyone's radar, but it's good stuff. Noise rock/sludge. Think Unsane, KEN Mode, Kowloon Walled City. Smoke 'em.

Momentum - Herbivore

Not getting anywhere near the hype the last one seemed to get, which is unjust considering how much better this one is. Crusty punk songs about being a vegan.

Saturday, December 15, 2012

Bubonic Bear

Noisy, discordant sludge-punk.

Forced - Accursed Share

Doom/sludge/hardcore, in that order.

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Sakatat - Bir Devrin Sonu

Ripping old school grindcore.

Sunday, December 9, 2012

Harm's Way - No Gods No Masters EP

I heard Isolation and thought it was okay. Then I heard this and thought it was a lot better.

Asilo - Geografías / Wardance

Single from their forthcoming album with a cover of Killing Joke's 'Wardance.' Heavy, oppressive, murky doom.

Dropout - Dropout EP

Heavy, grim metallic hardcore featuring Brett of Annihilate Next Week fame.

Monday, December 3, 2012

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Hivesmasher - Gutter Choir

Technical, mathy death metal and grindcore.

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

East of Oceans - 121 Years

Not my usual cup of tea, but this is a good, chill album for the post-midnight hours. The internet tells me this belongs to the genre of "drum and bass," whatever that means. It's pretty cool, I like it.

Owen Hart - Earth Control

Is it metallic hardcore? Or hardcorelic metal? Now known as Earth Control since the Owen Hart Foundation made them change their name.

Monday, November 26, 2012

Code Orange Kids - Love Is Love // Return To Dust

Promising hardcore/sludge band finally puts out their first full length.

Leftöver Crack - Mediocre Generica

Wish they would put out another damn record already.

Sunday, November 25, 2012

Iskra - Bureval

Blackened crust.

Monday, November 19, 2012

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Paradise Blue

I love ska. This is ska/jazz excellence. Deal with it.

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Saåad - Confluences

Last summer, the festival Toulouse d’Été commissioned Saåad to work on the St-Michel fountain, personification of the confluence of the river Ariège and Garonne. Romain Barbot & Greg Buffier took their recording material to this specific place and gave life to a 20 minutes trip divided in 4 movements. Confluences is lead by field recordings and chanting guitars, showing a new face of the french duo who found the balance point between immensity and intimacy.

Violent Action - Death

Grimy, crusty music for grimy, crusty dudes and dudettes.

Chest Pain - s/t 7"

Just some more killer powerviolence.

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Jungbluth - s/t tape

Turns out the "hype," such as it is, is well founded on this one. Member(s?) of Alpinist I guess, kinda jangly, kinda epic, vaguely post but still heavy and aggressive punk and hardcore. Named after a German communist and antifascist.

Iron Lung - Sexless//No Sex

Aw yeah mmhmm.

Monday, November 12, 2012

Shining - Redefining Darkness

Primal, bestial black metal this is not. Clean vocals, extended quieter sections, horns, there's a definite gothic element to all this. These guys show off black metal's classier side.

Death Toll 80k - Harsh Realities

This band and record need more love always.

Crusades - The Sun is Down and The Night is Riding In

You might guess that pop punk is not in regular rotation for me, but this here is some catchy and energetic stuff without being too melodic or saccharine.

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

iamdisease - iamdisease

Crusty, metallic hardcore with a bit of sludge and d-beat for good measure.

Capitalist Casualties - 1996-1999 Years in Ruin

Listen to this instead of voting today.

Monday, November 5, 2012

Young And In The Way - Amen

Something you probably already have, and definitely should if you don't.

Friday, November 2, 2012

Look Back and Laugh - 2nd LP

Pretty much everything you could want from a thrashy punk band.

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

HoF - BBW

Today is in need of more killer riffs. This should fix that for you.

Monday, October 29, 2012

Isis - Celestial

If they had given up after writing "Celestial (The Tower)", they would still have been one of the greatest post-metal bands.

Sick Fix - Vexed

Awesome, heavy hardcore/powerviolence, Coke Bust connection.

Stresscase - Cut Me Off

Get you some power-fucking-violence.
